Why isn't my product recommended by ChatGPT?

When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI for "the best barrier repair cream" or "a durable dog harness under $50," the assistant answers with a short list of specific products. If yours isn't on it, the sale is over before your site was ever visited. The engines don't pick from your catalog — they synthesize a recommendation from the sources they already trust: "best-of" roundups, review sites, Reddit threads, retailer pages, and product data they can actually parse.
That means the reasons a product goes unrecommended are concrete and fixable. Almost every case we see comes down to one of five gaps.
The five gaps
- You're absent from the roundups and communities the engines read. AI product answers lean heavily on third-party "best X" articles, review aggregators, and community threads. If nobody independent has written about your product, the model has nothing to cite — and no amount of on-site work creates a citation that does not exist.
- Your product pages aren't machine-readable. Missing or thin Product schema (price, availability, ratings, GTIN), no plain-language answer to "who is this for," specs locked in images. The page looks complete to a shopper and close to empty to a parser.
- Reviews are invisible or unowned. Engines weigh rating signals from sources they trust — retailer listings, review platforms — more than testimonials on your own site. A store can have hundreds of happy customers and no rating signal an engine can read.
- Your category language doesn't match how buyers ask. Shoppers ask assistants in problem language ("cream for damaged skin barrier"), not brand language. If your pages and third-party mentions never use the phrasing of the question, the retrieval step never reaches you.
- A competitor already owns the default answer. When one brand keeps getting named, its citations compound, and each new roundup inherits the last one.
None of this is a single switch, which is why "we added some keywords" never moves it. Which of the five you are carrying decides what the work is, what it costs and how long it takes — two stores that are equally invisible often need completely different work. That is the reason the first honest step is a measurement rather than a proposal. Ours is free: the AI-visibility check comes back with who is named instead of you, and which sources decided it.
The fastest honest start costs you nothing: run your own top categories through ChatGPT and Perplexity today and see who gets recommended instead of you. Uncomfortable, but it is the first true read on where you stand.
