Who can help my Shopify store show up in AI answers?

By Pablo Aguiar, Deadpan Labs · October 4, 2026 · 5 min read

GEO · Shopify · Buying

Four kinds of help can get a Shopify store into the answers when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI what to buy: your own team, a Shopify developer or SEO freelancer, an agency that runs SEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) together, and tracking software that tells you where you stand. Which one you need depends on what's missing. If the AI can't read your store, that's a developer's job. If it can read your store but nobody else has written about you, that's slow, ongoing work in the places assistants read, and it needs an owner. If you don't know which it is yet, find out before you hire anyone.

Many stores guess the technical problem, because it's the one they can see. On a standard Shopify theme it's often not the problem at all.

What each kind of help is good at

Our guide "GEO: agency, in-house, or software?" compares three of these in depth. Here's the short version, plus the one it leaves out.

  • Your own team. Best placed for anything that depends on knowing the product and the customers. On most small Shopify teams, the limit is hours, not know-how.
  • A Shopify developer or SEO freelancer. The right call when the problem is on the site itself: a custom front end that hides products from crawlers, broken structured data, pages that load the important content too late. Often a fixed, bounded job. Less suited to the off-site half, which never really finishes.
  • An SEO and GEO agency. Takes on both halves, the site and the places assistants read, as one ongoing job. It makes sense when nobody in-house can own that work.
  • Tracking software. Shows where you're named and who's named instead, across many questions and engines. It's a measuring tool.

Why it usually isn't a technical fix

Shopify's standard themes render product pages on the server. When we tested 115 online stores on October 1, 2026, every product page we could read had the product's name in the HTML before any JavaScript ran. What decides whether you're named is mostly outside your store: the roundups, review sites, forums and retailer listings that assistants build their answers from. If none of them mention you, a perfect product page still gives the engine nothing to cite except you.

That's why "we fixed the site" so often changes nothing in the answers. The site was rarely the bottleneck. Being mentioned somewhere the assistant trusts usually is, and that takes weeks or months to show up, not days.

Red flags when you hire help

Whoever you hire, a few things are worth walking away from:

  • A guaranteed ranking or a promised ChatGPT mention. Nobody controls what a model says, and anyone who promises it is guessing.
  • A score with no answers behind it. A number you can't check against what the assistants actually said is a number you have to take on faith.
  • Paid placements sold as earned mentions. A bought spot in a "best of" list can disappear, and paid links that aren't labeled as paid break Google's spam policies.
  • Measurement sold as the work. A view of where you stand is useful, but if nothing else is delivered, nobody is changing the answer.

Where Deadpan Labs fits

We're in the third group: a Miami SEO and GEO agency for Shopify and DTC brands. We measure whether the assistants name you and who they name instead, and we do the work that changes it, on the site and off it. We don't promise rankings or mentions, and every method we sell is tested on our own brands first. If your store needs a developer or a tracking tool rather than us, we'll say so.

The quickest way to know which kind of help you need is to see where you stand today. Our free AI-visibility check runs your category's questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI and comes back with who gets named instead of you, and the sources those answers cited. For the technical half, our free AI-crawler check shows which AI crawlers your robots.txt lets in.
